Growth of Acacia auriculiformis, Dipterocarpus turbinatus and Pinus caribaea at Chittagong University [of Bangladesh]

In the present investigation growth and soil properties under plantations of Acacia auriculiformis, Pinus caribaea and Dipterocarpus turbinatus on 5.25% slopes of medium high hills under the University of Chittagong were determined. The soils were sandy clay loam and moderately acid. The content of organic carbon was between 0.30% and 0.41% and CEC ranged from 1.2 to 8.2 meq/100 g soil under the plantations. The surface soil contained higher organic C, total N, available P and K followed by gradual decrease with depth of soil. The overall fertility of soil in the plantations was poor and the poorest under D. turbinatus. The heights of four and five year old A. auriculiformis plantations were 9.79 m and 7.74 m respectively and the corresponding dbh values were 6.63 cm and 5.64 cm D. turbinatus was the slowest growing in both height and dbh, and A. auriculiformis and P. caribaea were the fastest in height and dbh respectively.
