Insect constraints for development of seed potato programme in Bangladesh

The major insect pests involved in the production of seed potatoes in Bangladesh are the green peach aphid (GPA), Myzus persicae (Sulzer); the potato leaf hopper, Empoasca devastans Distant; the cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel) and the potato tuber moth (PTM), Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller). For controlling the GPA, full cover sprays of potato fields with Azodrin/Nuvacron/Monodrin at 2 ml per litre of water at 10-day interval up to haulm cutting may be used. A poison bait may be used against the cutworm. To prepare poison bait for application in one hectare, 2 kg Padan 50 SP to be mixed with 100 kg wheat or rice bran with sufficient water to make the above mixture as non-sticky flakes. To control the PTM, Decis powder (0.05%) at 7.5 kg/ton of tuber or Elsan 50 EC or Decis 2.5 EC at 1 ml/litre of water may be used. The importance of varietal resistance and chemical control measures and the use of the PTM sex pheromones have been discussed for the development of an integrated PTM management programme.
