Physical characteristics of wild and cultured Cirrhinus mrigala have been studied and compared. The cultured mrigal fish were silvery in colour and somewhat cylindrical in shape having larger scales and more compact texture. The girth at the middle portion was wider in wild than in the farmed fish. The ratio of the edible (muscle) to the non-edible (head, bones, gut, scales and fins) portion was also higher in the wild fish than the cultured ones.
