Effects of different levels of dietary protein and energy on water consumption, droppings of starcross pullets

Two experiments were conducted using 640 starcross replacement pullets in each, and were fed ad libitum on either of the 16 diets computed by the combination of 4 CP X 4 ME levels to investigate the interaction of protein and energy levels on their water consumption, dropping's moisture content and body temperature. In both the two experiments, water consumption increased linearly with the increase of dietary protein levels but decreased with the increased dietary energy levels. In these experiments, the water/feed ratio, dropping's moisture percent and body temperature increased linearly with the increase of dietary protein or energy levels and water/body weight gain ratio decreased with the increased energy levels but had an irregular trend with increased protein levels. A higher water consumption and body temperature were observed in experiment 1 than that of experiment 2. It could be concluded that increased water must be available to the birds offered diets with high protein content.
