Inheritance of leaf persistency and fibre yield in Olitorius jute [Barrackpur, West Bengal, India]

From an eight parent diallel cross in olitorius jute the nature of inheritance of the number of persistent leaves and fibre yield were studied. Both additive and dominance genetic components were significant for each character, the latter having preponderant effect. Due to inclusion of two distinct groups of parents (normal and mutant), some parents contained more dominant alleles than others in case of leaf persistency. Wide variation of array variances of the three leaf mutants (Palmate leaf, Tobacco leaf and Crinkle leaf) might be another cause of this behaviour, indicating the dissimilar nature of the mutants due to differences in their induced genetic backgrounds. Consequent upon the present findings, breeding methodologies such as population improvement approach in the form of diallel selective mating or mass selection with concurrent random mating were suggested for exploitation of both additive and non-additive gene actions.
