The story of layabouts [in Bangladesh]
1989
Husain
It has been observed that in many families in Bangladesh there are one or two able-bodied male members who do not engage themselves in productive activities; they prefer to remain idle and live on family resources. This article presents the findings of a recent study conducted in 40 villages of Comilla and Noakhali districts to examine the characteristics of such persons, called the 'layabout', to learn about their life style and attitudes, and to highlight the problems created by them. The findings indicate that the layabouts are averse to work and extend perverse interpretations for not doing any work. The problem is attitudinal. Parents and guardians do not exert necessary influence on the layabouts in the early years to develop a productive mind in them. There is also a lack of social pressure on them. The existence of such a large sub-group in the study villages implies that the problem is alarming; it needs to be addressed with seriousness. The findings suggest that there should be a national survey to estimate the number of layabouts in the country and suitable programme including training has to be designed to bring about a change in the attitude of the layabouts and to involve them in productive activities for the sake of national development.
