Response of rice to added phosphorus and chemical composition of rice plants [in Bangladesh]

The response of rice to fertilizer phosphate under waterlogged conditions was studied in a pot experiment using two soils. Both soils were of a low phosphate status and the available phosphate pool was further depleted by intensive growing of grass prior to the experiment. The result revealed that better growth and an increased dry yield can be obtained by the application of fertilizer phosphorus. This effect is more pronounced with the soil particularly deficient in phosphate. There was a marked effect of fertilizer on the concentration of phosphorus in the plant material in both soils. However, for the Giffnock soil, phosphorus application brings a substantial increase in the concentration of phosphate in rice plants. There was no marked effect of phosphorus application on iron, manganese, calcium and potassium content of rice plants.
