Sociological research on Milpa farming in reference to Toledo rural development project

Milpa farming (shifting cultivation) is discussed against the Mayan sociological background. The main principles of this farming system are outlined as well as the basic social units of the society who practice it. Comments are made on the significance of the Mayan social units for agricultural development, the constraints to development and how the constraints can be switched to positive aspects. The view is offered that social change, particularly in traditional or indigenous societies is best achieved by grafting innovation unto what already exists - a modified rate of social and economic change at a rate to which the majority of the society can adapt in a manageable context.
