[Effects of winter supplementation with urea-salt block in steers under confinement, fed on corn silage and wheat straw]
1990
Rozas L, Alejandro Agustin
The purpose of this study was to find out the urea-salt block effects as a complement to a ration based on corn silage, wheat straw and water, on 12 native young bulls weighing an average of 205 kg. a.w. The animals were divided into 2 groups of 6 young bulls each, fed as follows: Group I: Corn silage, wheat straw and water. Group II: Corn silage, wheat straw, water and urea-salt block. The average alive daily weight gain for Group I was 0.13 kg and for Group II, 0.51 kg. The total alive daily weight for the second group was significantly higher (P 0.05) than that of the first group, being 36 kg and 9.1 kg respectively. The average daily dry matter consumption was 5.02 kg and 6.08 kg for the first and second groups respectively. The feeding conversion efficiency was 36.62 and 11.92 for the first and second groups respectively. The average ruminal ammoniac values were 21.77 mg/NH3-N/1 and 69.15 mg/NH3-N/1. for the first and second groups respectively. In general, it is concluded that: giving only the basal ration (corn silage, wheat straw and water) is not enough to get the daily gains expected of 0.22 kg; being the limited nutrients protein and P. The daily gain was 0.13 kg. When complementing this basal ration with urea-salt blook (VETERBLOCK T.M.) the expectations of increasing such gains were surpassed. The daily gain was 0.51 kg
