[Differential irrigation in asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) in a nursery and during the first year of plantation]

A research dealing with differential water application in asparagus, cultivar UC-72, was carried out at the Experimental Station of the University of Concepcion at Chillan. The experiment was realized throughout two seasons: (i) nursery 1987-1988 and (ii) first year 1988-1989. At the nursery experiment the treatments of water were applied through a sprinkler line. The parameters evaluated were: (1) canopy growth, (ii) number of stems, (iii) canopy weight and (iv) root weight. The soil water content was measured with neutrometer. The results show that deficit and excess of water reduce in an important amount the asparagus growth (Canopy and root). At the first year of planting the irrigation treatments were 125, 100, 75, 50 and 25 percent of pan evaporation, and was applied with trickle irrigation. The parameters evaluated were: (i) canopy height, (ii) diameter and number of stems, (iii) canopy weight, (iv) and root weight. Soil water content was measured with neutrometer. The results of the first year of planting show again an important effect of deficit and excess of water applied in the evaluated parameters. The 100 % of pan evaporation treatment showed the best results in root and canopy growth. The water status of the plant was measured with Infrared Thermometer and Shollander pump technique. Both of them were not adequate to establish the water status in asparagus, due to a tremendous variability among the measurements
