[Effects of different nitrogen rates and fractioning on green asparagus]

Knowledge in asparagus relative to rates and time of N application do not allow to generalize recommendations; apparently, they could be different for localities, according to if the crop is irrigated or not, and to the prevailing climatic conditions throughout its vegetative cycle. During a period of five years, that included the first three seasons of harvest, the effect of different rates of N and forms of fractionating, on asparagus UC 72, under the conditions of Valdivia, which has summers with water deficit, were studied. Results indicate that yields were not different for the three rates used (128,144 and 192 kg/ha of N), neither for the three forms of fractioning the rates. These results imply that the lower rate would be sufficient and that there would be no need of fractioning its application, allowing to set all the N before starting the harvest or at the end of it; nevertheless, it would be safer to do it at the beginning and not at the end, considering the eventual lack of soil moisture after the harvest. Is presented, likewise, the weekly yield distribution, through the first 90 days of harvest, and the proportion of it in the different calibers of spears harvested throughout the first three years of production
