To improve enzymatic hydrolysis, rice and wheat straw was pretreated with 4% NaOH for 24h, followed by electron beam irradiation in doses of 10,30,50 and 100 Mrad. The effect of pretreatment on enzymatic hydrolysis was measured by fragility of straw (percentage of powder finer than 200 meshes) and glucose output rate. Both of them increased with radiation dose rising from zero to 100 Mrad in the samples pretreated with only radiation. However, in the samples pretreated with both 4% NaOH and radiation, the glucose output rate increased with increasing radiation doses from zero to 50 Mrad, until its maximum, 36%, three times that of the unpretreated, then it decreased with increasing radiation doses. The same trend appeared in rice and wheat straw. It can be considered that the combined pretreatment with radiation of certain doses and low concentration of NaOH could more markedly enhance enzymatic hydrolysis reaction and the radiation dose could be lowered in the presence of 4% NaOH
