Neoplasias and dysplasias of the dog's mammary gland

Literature concerning the frequency of mammary tumors and dysplasias in dog, in relation to age as well as to the possible causes, were described in the introduction. The systematic grouping of tumors and dysplasias based on the WHO classification is also given. However, mixed tumors of dog, in contrast with human tumors of this category on which WHO classification is based, consist a particularly extended chapter. Because of this, it was believed, that a differentiation in their classification was a necessity and thus mixed tumors of dog were considered as a separate class. The carcinomas were designated as adenocarcinoma, solid carcinoma, malignant myoepithelioma, anaplastic carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and mucinous carcinoma. The term adenocarcinoma was used only for malignant neoplasias, where the epithelial in nature neoplastic cells were forming ducts or/and alveoli. The sarcomas were classified as osteosarcoma, osteochondrosarcoma, fibrosarcoma and other sarcomas. The term "mixed tumors" was coined for neoplasias with cells resembling both to the glandular and myoepithelial cells of mammary glands as well as to the mesenchymal cells (myxo-chondroosteocytes).
