A study of the potentials and socio economic significance of bamboo plantation in the sub-humid regency of Pati, Central Java (Indonesia)

Bamboos have long cultivated by people in the tropics to provide the raw material for hundreds of implements of daily necessity in the homes and in the pursuit of a livelihood in rural areas. A survey was accomplished from June to July 1988 in the sub-humid regency of Pati to learn on the potentials and socio-economic importance of the native bamboo plantations. Data were collected with the use of simple sampling methods in five village viz. Tlogoayu, Pantirejo, Sambirejo, Trimulyo dan Gadingrejo which were selected because of their similary in soil and climate. The results of this survey indicated that the people in this sub-humid area have a preference for two bamboo species, namely Bambusa arundinacea (bambu ori) and Gigantochloa apus (bambu apus). These species occured however in an uneven distribution of hectarage 93.6 versus 6.1 percent. Each village had averagely 472 clumps, with a density of 14.7 clums per hectare and the number of clums per clum ranged from 17 to 31. The regeneration potential which was expressed by the ratio of numbers of new clums to old stood on the average at 1.34. Of all the heads of families in the village 36.2 percent owned bamboo plantations, which were ancestrally inherited. Plantation management was relatively sufficient, 84 percent of the owners took care of the plantations versus 16 percent were negligent.
