New essential oil crops (Clausena, Foeniculum, Backhousia citriodora and Litsea cubeba)

Number of Indonesian essential oils are still limited. Some of them are Clausena anisata Oliv., Foeniculum vulgare Mill., Litsea cubeba Pers. and Backhousia citriodora Myr which are potential to be developed. Clausena is usually multiplied by grafting, using C. exavata as root stocks. The oil content of fresh leaves of C. anisata is 1.6-2.2 percent, but oil yield on distillation was about 1.5-2.0 percent anethol content of clausena oils is around 93 percent. Foeniculum vulgare is usually cultivated in high land. Oil content of the seed is 5.4-6.2 percent and the oil yield on distillation was around 3.4-4.1 percent. The anethol content of the oil is about 26 percent. Oil yield on distillation of Litsea cubeba leaf was 5.6-7.8 percent and the main component of the oil was sineol (about 30 percent). The main component of Backhousia citriodora leaf oil was citral (81-91 percent) and the oil content in the leaf was 1.7-3.9 percent. The physical and chemical properties of this oil were relatively the same as lemon grass oil. (Author)
