The influence of rainfall on the 1990 sugar cane crop of Caroni (1975) Limited
1991
Georges, J.E.W. (Caroni Research Station, Carapichaima (Trinidad and Tobago))
The management of a crop deals with optimising genetic and environmental factors to achieve maximum yields. Of the environmental factors rainfall is the dominant factor in Trinidad. The 1989 wet season was abnormally mild and the early dry season unusually wet. These conditions therefore predisposed the crop to improved growth but retarded ripening. The average sugar cane yield in 1990 was the highest in 14 years being 20 percent higher than the 20 year average. However, similar yields were previously achieved in 2 other years. Rainfall in the preceding wet season was an important factor influencing sugar cane yields in the last 20 years and was a significant contributor to increased yields in 1990.
