Biotechnology: An assessment of its applicability in the improvement of Kenyan tea clones - Tissue and cell culture

To reduce the effects of two major Kenyan tea pests, thrips and mites and the two major diseases of economic importance Armillaria and Hypoxylon, drought and other edaphic stresses, it is necessary to breed hardier plants, better adopted to their soil and resistant to pests and diseases. There is also need to produce homozygous plants which can be used in extensive genetic studies. In this paper prospects of using biotechnology in mitigating some of the mentioned problems are reviewed. Mentions the use of cell and tissue culture, somatic cell hybridization and the esoteric recombinant DNA technology
