Onset and transition of rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV) and rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV) infection

Low level of tungro infection was obtained in wetbed seedling nursery and major infection of plants occurred after transplanting. The transition of tungro infection in the plant, from healthy to composite infection of RTBV [rice tungro bacciliform virus] and RTSV [Rice tungro spherical virus] was monitored by ELISA [enzyme linked immunosorbent assay]. RTSV infection occurred in the second and third week; at the same time tungro symptoms became apparent. After four weeks following transplanting, composite infection was observed mostly in previously healthy plants and in few plants infected with either RTBV or RTSV. In the fifth week, most of the remaining healthy plants and those already infected during the previous weeks with RTSV became doubly infected. These indicate that composite infection does not necessarily result from single infection of either RTBV or RTSV. The first few weeks after transplanting was critical for tungro disease development. The use of insecticides at early growth stage of transplanted rice showed the progress of the disease in susceptible cultivar. In the case of cultivar with RTSV resistance, a highly satisfactory control of rice tungro was obtained even without the use of insecticides.
