The results of the firing tests showed that the rice hull gasifier-combustor can be used effectively for firing bricks. The foremost requirement, a peak temperature of 750-850 deg C, had been met in most of the experiments. Strength and water absorption tests conducted on the products revealed that their properties are within set standards. Coconut husks and corn cobs, the two most abundant agricultural wastes in the country were also used in some of the tests. The results proved encouraging. A clean flame which is also suitable for brickfiring was observed. To further evaluate the feasibility of using the gasifier-combustor for brickfiring, succeeding activities should focus on the fabrication of a large unit with improved ash-removal system and fuel loading, construction of a kiln suitable for a gasifier-combustor and a study on the conversion of an existing wood or oil-fired kiln to rice hull-fed system.
