Field experience of in-store drying of paddy under tropical climate

Technical feasibility study of drying paddy in polyester fibre glass silos has been conducted at Jaruwat Rice Mill, Bang Len district, Nakorn-Pathom province [Thailand], about 50 kilometers from Bangkok. Drying rate, quality of paddy, energy consumption and drying cost in terms of energy have been investigated. Two-stage drying has been demonstrated. At first, incoming wet paddy was dried rapidly in batch for a few percentages of moisture content with drying air temperature of 45-49 deg C. Then it was further slowly dried in storage silos with low flow rate of ambient air for about one month. The two-stage drying technique ensured quality safe. Head yield was 42%. Whiteness value measured by KETT-model C 300 was 44. Germination was 94%. The specific energy consumption was found to be 4.87 and 1.46 MJ/kg water evaporated for batch and in-store drying, respectively. It was estimated that the specific energy cost for in-store drying was 0.61 Baht/kg water evaporated or 39.22 Bath/ton of wet paddy dried from 20 to 14.5% wet-basis. In-store drying of paddy has already been accepted by a private rice mill. However, it is still not accepted by farmers.
