Water regimes and their effect on weeds and yield of wet-seeded rice

Three field experiments on the effect of water regimes on wet-seeded rice (Oryza sativa L.) were conducted during the 1986 to 1989 dry season. In all experiments, Echinochloa glabrescens Munro ex Hook f., Monochoria vaginalis (Burm f.) Presl, Fimbristylis miliacea (L.) Vahl, Paspalum distichum L., and Cyperus difformis L. were the predominant weeds present. In the first experiment, all plots treated with butachlor gave significantly higher yield and lower weed weight compared to the untreated plots irrespective of water level. In the second experiment, standing water during seeding reduced plant stand. The lowest yield, highest weed weight, and highest weed density were recorded in plots that were not treated with the herbicide. In the third experiment, weed weight at 45 days after seeding was significantly affected by the herbicide applied but not by water level. Weed weight and number of species were not different from each other in the herbicide-treated plots but were significantly lower than the unweeded check plots. Also, there were more weed species growing under saturated conditions than at higher water levels.
