Optimum number of replications, locations and seasons for regional cotton variety trial

Previous records of the CRDI [Cotton Research and Development Inst., Batac, Ilocos Norte, Philippines] cotton variety trials with similar entries across years and locations were examined and reanalyzed to determine the optimum number of replications, locations, and years of varietal testing. The expected variance of the variety mean was computed over several numbers of environment and used to gauge the precision of varietal performance. Results showed that two years of testing in 10 to 15 locations with four replications appeared practically sufficient for cotton varietal testing.
