Impact of an agri-based transnational enterprise on peasants and peasant community: the case of Del Monte in Bukidnon [Philippines]

The study aimed to determine the socioeconomic impact of Del Monte Philippines, Inc. (DMPI), an agri-based transnational enterprise (TNE), on peasants and peasant community using mode of production as a tool for analysis. Sta. Fe, a barangay in Libona, Bukidnon [Philippines] was the community selected for the study. To accomplish the above objective, three areas of concern were analyzed, namely: (a) the establishment of DMPI in Bukidnon and its current plantation operation; (b) the impact of DMPI on the peasant community; and (c) the economic status of the sectors in the community. Results indicate that the entry of DMPI transformed the peasant community into a new social formation having two distinct modes of production interacting with each other, namely: the capitalist mode and the subsistence mode. The capitalist mode is given reality through the concentration of land under the control of DMPI, the existence of a large number of hired agricultural workers employed by DMPI, the production of cash crops mainly for export and the use of modern technology. The study also shows that the agricultural workers employed by DMPI are economically better off than the farmers. However, both the agricultural workers and the subsistence farmers have remained below the poverty threshold.
