Sustainability of AEOP [ Agricultural Education Outreach Projects]-Assisted outreach projects: the case of Aklan Agricultural College [Philippines]

The results revealed that the respondents were generally old (53 years), have attended elementary grades, have five members in the family, have been farming for 27 years, and earning an annual mean income of P7,974.20 from their farming activities. Sixty-six percent of the respondents were owner-operators. Majority of the project established were on vegetables, citrus, piggery and poultry. Sixty-seven percent of the crop projects and 58 percent of the animal projects were still in existence at the time of the study. The great majority of the respondents adopted the crop production practices introduced by the SOAs [Student Outreach Agents] whereas only 20 percent adopted the animal production practices. Rice (rainfed) project had the biggest mean area, followed by citrus. Both crop and animal projects utilized an averages farm area of 1.32 ha. Land use of the respondents was generally low. Citrus project was the respondents' highest income earner followed by rice (rainfed) project. The respondents' mean income from both crop and animal projects was P12,042 per annum. As a whole, the respondents' income from the project was rated as low. Crop and animal projects in Sibalew were significantly different from those in other villages. The correlation coefficient test revealed that eight of the 14 predictor variables showed highly significant relationship and two were significantly related to the sustainability of AEOP [Agricultural Education Outreach Projects]-assisted outreach projects. Using the multiple regression analysis, the variance in the sustainability of the AEOP-assisted projects was best explained by the respondents' civil status, educational attainment, household size, tenure status, number of SOA-assisted projects, availment of AEOP loan, participation on AEOP-sponsored activities and perception at the AEOP.
