Pruning the cost of prawns

Lowering the tariff rate on prawn feeds and on some prawn feed ingredients will help improve the competitiveness of Philippine prawns in the world market. This paper argues that the move will decrease the domestic prices of the imported and local prawn feeds and will encourage local use of the product. It is also argued that the government should seriously consider the phasing out of the BOI [Bureau of Investment] subsidies for prawn exports in order to avoid a repetition of the adjustment problems which the industry suffered in the middle of 1989.
