Phosphine treatment for long-term storage of milled rice was carried out by using two 53-tonne stacks of fragrant rice variety. After sheet sealing and pressure testing, the rice was treated with phosphine at the rate of one tablet per tonne. During the storage period, changes in temperature and humidity within the stacks were monitored. Moisture content, rice quality, insect, and fungal infestation were also investigated before and after treatment. The stacks were opened for inspection after 170 and 200 days, respectively. The treatment gave total protection from insects. No live insect was found in any of the treated stacks. No increase in fungal infestation and aflatoxin was detected. Rice quality decreased slightly with increased storage period.
