Growth responses of three Azolla species to different phosphorus levels in batch cultures

Azolla pinnata var. imbricata, A. microphylla were grown in batch cultures of nitrogen-free 40 percent Hoagland solution of different phosphorus (P) levels (1, 10, 20, 50 and 100 ppm) under greenhouse conditions for two weeks. Higher fresh matter yield and lower doubling times were obtained with higher P levels. While leaf formation increased with higher P levels in A. pinnata, there was a decrease in the other two species. Chlorophyll content decreased with increasing P levels in both A. pinnata and A. microphylla. Higher pigment levels were noted in A. caroliniana under all P regimes. Phosphorus content of dry matter increased with higher P levels in all three species, especially in A. pinnata. Protein content of fresh matter was higher at lower (1 and 10 ppm) P levels in the three species. A. pinnata tissues contained more protein than the other two species, especially with 1, 10 and 20 ppm P in the culture solution.
