[Industrialization and external trade in prepared fruit and vegetable products]

Based essentially on Trade Statistics of Portugal, data relating to quantities and values of Export and Import of Prepared Horticulture and Fruit Products between 1978 and 1987 were analysed. The remarkable consequences of the Portuguese integration in the European Economic Comunity are pointed out. The export trade rate of those products to the EEC increased from 14,3 % in 1982 to 25,0 % in 1987, and the import trade rate went up from 17,8 % to 67,9 %. Taking into account the unique soil and weather conditions of Portugal for the horticultural and fruit production in the open or in greenhouse, the potential interest those crops might have to the food industries is recognized, considering the 320 millions of inhabitants with a high purchasing power, once those products establish themselves through their novelty, quality, public image and price

Com base fundamentalmente nas Estatisticas do Comercio Externo de Portugal analisaram-se os dados das quantidades e valores de Exportacao e de Importacao de Preparados de Produtos Hortofruticolas no decenio de 1978-87. Registam-se as notaveis consequencias da integracao de Portugal no espaco economico europeu, tendo a quota de exportacao para a CEE desses Produtos Hortofruticolas Preparados passado de 14,3 % em 1982 para 25 % em 1987, e a de importacao ascendido de 17,8 % para 67,9 %. Considerando as excepcionais condicoes edafoclimaticas de Portugal para a producao de hortofruticolas ao ar livre ou sob coberto de estufas, reconhece-se o interesse que essas producoes poderao ter para as industrias alimentares hortofruticolas industriais, atendendo aos 320 milhoes de habitantes com apreciavel poder de compra, desde que tais produtos se afirmem pela criatividade-inovacao, qualidade, imagem de marca e preco
