This book contains the proceedings of a symposium, organized by ICARDA and the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Rural Affairs and held at Ankara, Turkey from 6 to 10 July 1987, on problems and prospects of agriculture in high-elevation areas. The papers presented are organized into five major sections to characterize the agroecological conditions in high-elevation areas; to identify the major physical, biological, and socioeconomic constraints to production; to review the present status of research and research infrastructure; to make recommendations to researchers and policy makers for future development of agriculture in highlands or mountainous areas; and to develop an action plan and a dynamic network of national and international research systems to accelerate the pace of the activities in an effort to increase food production in WANA region
