This book is the proceedings of the first coordination meeting for barley and wheat scientists in the Arabian Peninsula held in Sana'a, the Yemen Arab Republic in 1988. The meeting aimed at initiating a regional program for barley and wheat research and training in the Arabian peninsula and to strengthen the ability of national systems to use and generate agricultural technology to satisfy the national needs and experiences of the scientists from the Sudan and Egypt on barley and wheat improvement and the workings of the Nile Valley Program. Accounts of barley and wheat research and production and the major constraints to increased production in the Yemen, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait were presented. The presentations were followed by deliberations and discussions during which common constraints to barley and wheat production in the concerned countries were identified. A workplan for research, training, and transfer of technology was developed, and areas of networks were determined for the region. A regional steering committee was constituted to follow up on the workplan and to coordinate research activities with national programs
