A field experiment was conducted at the Rothamsted Experimental Station on a silty clay loam soil, UK, in 1990 using the cultivar Alfred to test the effects of four levels of soil pH in combination with four amounts of soil phosphate, with and without foliar sprays of manganese on spring-sown faba bean. At pH 4.6 the crop failed with all but the largest amount of P. The yields increased by increasing levels of pH to 7.7, the maximum tested
