[Screening for resistance to smuts of some new sorghum varieties and efficacy of seed dressing fungicides against covered kernel smut (Sphacelotheca sorghi)]
1991
Abbas, A.
Resistance of a collection of 29 genotypes of sorghum (Sorghum vulgare Pers) was evaluated in the field for resistance to covered kernel smut (Sphacelotheca sorghi), and long smut (Tolyposporium ehrenbergii) using artificial inoculation with teliospores on seed, for two consecutive seasons: 1990 and 1991. Results showed field immunity in two of the tested genotypes. Seven others were highly resistant (infection 1%) or resistant (1-2%), the remaining 20 genotypes were either moderately resistant (2-5%) or highly susceptible (10%). Against long smut, 8 genotypes were immune, one was resistant (1-2% infection), the other 20 were M.R. (2-5%) or susceptible (5-10%). On the other hand, the efficacy of 15 liquid or powder fungicides was tested in the field using artificial inoculation on seed with S. sorghi. Five of the seed dressing formulations were highly efficient (95-100%)
