Organic matter content in stream water and sediment in sub-river basin of upper South [Thailand]

Average values of organic matter concentration in stream water and sediment of the first to the fifth watershed classes were 9.52 +- 2.47 mg/1 and 1.74 +- 1.30 %, 10.83 +-1.69 mg/1 and 0.78 +- 0.25 %, 13.64 +- 4.92 mg/1 and 0.82 +- 0.23 % 15.65 +- 2.17 mg/1 and 1.23 +- 0.07 %, 27.92 +-16.88 mg/1 and 1.57 +- 0.73 %, respectively. The sediment contained more organic matter than stream water did. Usually when the organic matter content in stream water was high, so was the organic matter content in sediment. The quantity of organic matter in stream water and sediment showed good correlation with that of the watershed classification but the difference of organic matter concentrations among the watershed classes was not high enough to be used as the criteria in watershed classification. Factors that could influence the quantity of organic matter content were land uses, watershed areas, water-drainage efficiency of each watershed as well as the quantity and the flow rate of water during seasonal changes.
