Distribution of rattan in tropical rain forest at Khao Chong, Trang province [Thailand]

Density of young rattans was higher than that of mature rattans. The distributions of five dominant rattans were related to environmental factors as follows. Calamus peregrinus, the most important rattan in the study area, had a distribution positively related to sodium, phosphorus and potassium content and negatively related to calcium and %soil porosity. Daemonorops didymophylla was positively related to % organic matter, magnesium and phosphorus, while Calamus bousigonii was positively related to soil cation exchange capacity and soil electrical conductivity, and negatively related to soil particle density, soil pH and elevation. Daemonorops tabacina was positively related to soil bulk density, soil electrical conductivity, % soil porosity, slope and soil cation exchange capacity but negatively related to % slope. The relationships between environmental factors and rattan distribution were % slope, % soil porosity, soil electrical conductivity, phosphorus, magnesium and sodium.
