Spacing/Population Trials on Soybean
1990
Mbalule, M.I. (Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Kampala (Uganda). Namulonge Research Station)
Research was carried out to find spacing that could suit peasant farmers conditions such as use of hand hoe and at the same time give good yields. Namulonge 1 variety of soya bean was used at a spacing of 30 by 30 cm and 100 by 25 cm at two different locations in Uganda i.e. Namulonge and Ikulwe. At the third location, Nakabango, entries were spaced at 50 by 25 cm, 30 by 30 cm; and 60 by 5 cm as control. The study revealed that there was a negative correlation between the population density and the number of branches as well as the number of pods per plant. Work in this area is continuing.
