Notes on banana and banana production in Uganda

Research on banana-based cropping systems in Uganda is currently being done by the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Makerere University under the sponsorship of the Rockfeller Foundation. The project aims at assisting the Ugandan farmers to increase the productivity and profitability of their banana-based cropping systems. On-farm research is being done to identify the farmers primary constraints and find solutions to them. Banana germplasm from within and outside the country is collected and evaluated for agronomic, pest, disease and yield characteristics. Elite banana cultivars obtained from testing under a range of different farming and ecological conditions will be multiplied and distributed to the farmers.
