Effects of plant materials on corn growth

Leaves (blades plus petioles from six leguminous plants namely: flemingia (Flemingia macrophyla), pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), albizia (Albizia lebbeck), giant sensitive plant (Mimosea invisa), sesbania (Sesbania grandiflora), dadap (Erythrina spp.), and guinea grass (Panicum maximum) were separately incorporated into soil to investigate their effects on corn (Zea mays) growth under greenhouse conditions. Among all of the materials tested, dadap increased plant growth and dry matter production the most. Except for flemingia, in general, increasing the rate of plant residue applied to soil enhanced plant growth and dry matter yield. In the present experiment, flemingia leaves did not increase corn growth; perhaps due to the lower N content, resistance to decomposition, and some unknown factor(s) in flemingia
