In the course of two years, the investigations were carried out into the certainty with which the milk line could serve as a visual indicator of grain water content, i.e. whether grain maize maturity could be determined on the basis of the position of the milk line. Grain water content and 1000 grain mass were investigated during 4 stages of grain development: denting, milk line formation, milk line positioned half-way down the grain and black layer formation on the grain. By the number of days and sum of effective temperature in these 4 stages, the speed of grain water reduction was determined. By monitoring the position of milk line on the grain, visual estimation proved to be a very reliable method in monitoring the reduction of the grain water content and in establishing the moment of full grain maize maturity.
