The fertilization of tobacco has a strong effect upon the pigment contents in the green tobacco leaves. The chlorophyll a, b, chlorophyll a+b and carotinoide contents increase with increasing the amount of nitrogen fertilizers, starting from the control, i.e. unirrigated variant, to the variant in which 70 kg/ha nitrogen was applied, in all the stages of investigation and in both years. The chlorophyll a and b content in the leaf of the Prilep tobacco variety decreases with the ageing of tobacco plant. The carotinoide content is the lowest in young plants and increases in the plants of the third and fourth stage of growth.
