Collection and investigation of indigenous Triticum varieties from Bosnia and Herzegovina [Yugoslavia] with the intention of preserving valuable germplasm

In the period 1983-1985. there were 384 samples collected, out of which 374 samples of common wheat and 10 samples of Triticum dicoccum. 343 samples belonged to winter type and 41 to spring type. 7 botanical varieties were identified, Erythrospermum and Lutescens being the most frequent. Evaluation of the collected material covered morphological, biological and some production features and qualites. Special attention was paid to testing for resistance to most important diseases and free aluminium tolerance. The collected material is characterised by high variability of different traits (stalk length ranged from 62.2-125.0 mm; spike length from 6.2 - 14.9 cm; number of spikelets per spike 1.2 - 24.0; number of grains per spike 19.0 - 57.8; 1000 grain weight 25.2 - 53.0 g). Important for breeding could be lines with large grain (49-53g) (6 lines); lines with long (46-58 days) and very short (38 days) periods earing-maturing; lines resistant to mildew (5 lines) to stem rust (6 lines); lines with a high protein content (about 18%), and lines tolerant to higher concentrations of free aluminium (4 lines).
