Some factors affecting acquirement of colostral immunity suckling piglets

The paper concentrates on Immunoglobulin G (lgG) concentration and porcine parvovirus (PPV-specific) HIA titre in the blood serum of piglets as may be related to colostrum intake within the initial 24 h and the time when it was first taken. Blood sera of piglets taking 600-900 g of the colostrum within the first 24 h yielded 71.18 g/l lgG. A considerably higher immunoglobulin concentration was found in piglets who suckled on 910-1200 or 1210-1500 g of the colostral milk (90.96 or 99.60 g/l lgG in the same period of time). The same groups had average PPV-specific HIA titres 1:725, 1:1408 and 1:4280, respectively. Piglets started on the colostrum within the first six hours after farrowing showed no significant differences in either the lgG concentration or titres regardless of whether the colostrum was first suckled inside the initial 3 hours or 4-6 h postpartum.
