Factors of post-mortem defects of hides and skins in Bangladesh

A survey was conducted to identify the causal factors of post-mortem defects in hides and skins. Sixty three slaughter house/places as well as 108 curing and storage establishments for hides and skins of 14 districts were visited. Date were collected through inspection of the establishments and interview of their personnels. A large number of factors of post-mortem defects in hides and skins associated with operations at slaughter house/places included incorrect design of the flaying knife (e.g. sharp pointed knife), careless and rapid flaying, inexperienced flayers particularly during Eid-ul-Azha festivals, artificial overstretching particularly of the goat skins, non- inclusion of cutaneous muscles in the hides and skins at the urban areas. Major factors related to processing and preservation were delay in curing particularly during Eid-ul- Azha festivals and in rural areas under-salting, dry salting and ground drying of the hides, incorrect design of the knife used in 'after cleaning', rapid and careless 'after cleaning'.
