Socio-economic and academic background of agricultural university students [of Bangladesh]

This article is based on a socio-economic and opinion survey of Bangladesh Agricultural University students. The principal objectives of the article are to focus on the socio-economic backgrounds of the students including the education. Occupation and income of student's fathers, their place of permanent residence, location of the educational institutions attended at different levels of education and their performances in the previous public examinations. It was revealed from the analysis of data that Bangladesh Agricultural University students came from the wealthier segment of the Bangladesh population. The average income of student's fathers was estimated to be taka 66.7 thousand per annum. Educational levels of students' parents were also found to be very high. Only 9.6 percent and 7.6 percent of fathers and mothers respectively were illiterate. About 65 percent of the students stated to come from rural areas while less than 50 percent of all the respondents were reported to have come from farmer families. It was further revealed that more then 75 percent of the farmer guardians were big farmers; the average size of holding of the farmer guardians was nearly 5 hectares
