Effect of inoculation methods on the development of black leg and soft rot disease complex of potato [in Bangladesh]

Several potato cultivars were tested by various inoculation methods against Erwinia carotovora sub sp. carotovora under field conditions. Among the methods, the tuber toothpick inoculation method produced more black leg plants (22.8%) than tuber dip inoculation (20.4%), stem inoculation by toothpick (20.5%) and stem inoculation by syringe (17.9%). When the tuber toothpick inoculation method was used alone for testing the reaction of 13 cultivars, the incidence of black leg plants varied from 10.0 to 26.5%. The highest black leg plants was found in cv. Multa (26.5%) and the lowest was found in cv. Morene (10%). The maximum yield reduction was observed in cv. Cardinal (60%) and the minimum was with cv. Origo (1.2%). Soft rot was found more in wounded (64.6%) than unwounded (5.6%) freshly harvested tubers. Highest soft rot was observed in cv. 1282-19 and lowest in cv. Cardinal.
