Inhibition of carotenoid biosynthesis an approach to release buds of Acer palmatum from dormancy?

Several problems in woody species complicate their propagation. Acer palmatum hybrids behave recalcitrant to micropropagation. Their buds hardly develop into shoots, explants rest. The possible role of ABA in this process was investigated. Recent studies could accumulate strong evidence for the ABA biosynthesis via a C40-precursor (carotenoid). The influence of four different inhibitors of the carotenoid biosynthesis was tested in two stages of culture. Results with Acer palmatum, Laurus nobilis, Viburnum bodnantense 'Dawn' and Rosa multiflora 'Montse' indicated that the inhibitors do change the patterns of carotenoids and chlorophylls, but the assumed positive effect on bud outgrowth could not be substantiated.
