Some stimuli triggering oviposition of Varroa jacobsoni Oudemans on worker larvae, under laboratory conditions, were investigated. Juvenile hormone III injected into the haemocoel or applied externally to larvae was unable to induce oviposition in a higher number of Varroa females; so different stimuli, present during late larval stages, seem to trigger oviposition. Close contact between larva and mite favours induction of egg laying: the proportion of reproducing Varroa females was much higher in mites reared in narrower artificial wax cells than in larger ones. Reproduction was also higher when larvae and mites were transferred to natural cells previously occupied by bee larvae than to a newly built comb or to artificial cells, and in artificial cells to which larval food has been applied, suggesting the presence of some specific stimulus in the latter.
