[Influence of harvesting date and cooling, on shelf life of fresh berries]

The effect of the time lapse between harvest and cooling on four cultivars of fresh, export-quality berries was studied on the basis of quality parameters and the change in these during seven days of storage at 0 deg with 90 - 95% RH. The cultivars used in this study were Meeker and Heritage red raspberries, Black Satin cultivated blackberry, and Boysenberry hybrid (all Rubus species). Under commercial conditions at harvest, color, texture, soluble solids concentration and total pH were evaluated. The fruit after harvesting and maintaining at room temperature was cooled in a tunnel at one to six hour intervals, measuring the time for removal of the field heat up to 0 deg. During seven consecutive days, the quality of the fruit for each treatment was evaluated, concluding that: under normal working conditions, the maximum permissible time lapse for cv. Meeker red raspberry is 2 hours for 3 day quality for cv. Black Satin cultivated blackberry, 4 hours for 5 day quality; and for cv. Boysenberry hybrid, 4 hours for 4 days quality. The most affected parameters were color and texture. Soluble solids concentration and pH were not significantly affected. The estimated weight losses before cooling were the following: cv. Meeker 1.14%; cv. Heritage 0.58%; cv. Black Satin 0.19% and cv. Boysenberry 0.33%. The weight losses after the storage time were the following: cv. Meeker 2.51% cv. Heritage 2.64%; cv. Black Satin 2.93%; and cv. Boysenberry 4.47%
