[N P and K requirements of industrial tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum. Mill)]
1991
Hernandez P, Pedro
An experiment was carried out aiming to determine some parameters, which independently from the actual situation of the field where they are obtained, will allow to give information about N, P and K needs for industrial tomatoes. It was considered the optimization of fruit as well as seed production. Also it was studied the plant nutrition related to fruit and seed quality. The results show that nitrogen fertilization affects fruit and seed yield, however P and K did not show any effect due to the high levels of these nutrients in the soil. On the other hand, NPK fertilization did not affect the tomato's pulp quality (pH and Brix grade), nor the seed quality. Therefore the most adequate fertilization for tomato yield (fruit and seed) will also assure fruit and seed quality. A harvest index of 0.63 was determined for plants of high production. The internal requirements of N, P and K, were respectively 2.06, 0.38 and 3.24%. The content of fruit's dry matter was 5.25%. With these antecedents it was possible to estimate the demand of N, P and K for "Rio grande" tomato concentrate, given different yield potentials. The fertilizer efficiency for N was 57% while the corresponding values of P and K were in this case underestimated, since they had very low results due to level of these nutrients in the soil. Finally, it was elaborated a table of N rates considering different soil N supplies
