Drought resistant paddy rice cultivar Xiang No. 1 and drought sensitive upland rice cultivar 763612 were used in conducting PEG 6000 osmotic stress. The experiment results showed that in the case of treatment under osmotic stress (-0.5 MPa), the permeability of plasma membrane and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents of two cultivars increased, when Chl. (chlorophylls) and Car. (carotene) contents of two cultivars decreased to a certain extent with the ratio between Chl. a/b and Chl./Car. remained almost unchanged; and that in the case of treatment under osmotic stress (-0.8 MPa), the permeability of plasma membrance and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents of two cultivars increased greatly, while Chl. and Car. contents of two cultivars dropped drastically. The ratio between Chl. a/b and Chl./Car. tends to rise. There also appeared to be certain difference along rice cultivars with different drought resistance. Under osmotic stress, there seemed to be a certain negative correlation between the content of photosynthetic pigment in plant and level of membrane-lipid peroxidation, but ethane was not released in the experiment
