Paspalum dilatatum, a C4 plant, was grown for 75 d in controlled environment growth chambers in a full nutrient solution. After this time half the plants starved in nitrogen (-N) for further 90 d. Total nitrogen and protein contents at the end of 90 d starvation were one third of the value of the control. Photosynthetic rate decreased in -N plants after 15 d starvation and was at the end of treatment four times lower than in the control. Chlorophyll and carotenoid contents decreased parallel to the photosynthetic rate. Stomatal resistance increased twice in -N plants at 30, 60 and 75 d starvation. Also phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) and ribulose-1.5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) activities decreased substantially in -N plants.
